Colchester’s Economic Development department works strategically to increase prosperity throughout Colchester County, building strong and vibrant communities by attracting, supporting, and retaining businesses and residents. Economic Development efforts support the Municipality of Colchester’s framework to communicate to the public, staff, community stakeholders, and government partners, a path by which we will achieve our commitments to creating a municipality that embraces innovation, good governance, and fiscal responsibility
Our Economic Development framework is designed to provide ongoing support to businesses of all sizes. Colchester offers a favorable environment for businesses to thrive, with resources and strategies designed to foster private sector growth, innovation, and collaboration.
Key Economic Development Initiatives
Debert Business Park Development
Colchester County is actively fostering economic growth by enhancing the infrastructure of Debert Business Park. In March 2024, a collaborative investment of approximately $5.4 million from federal, provincial, and municipal governments was announced to double the capacity of the Debert Sewage Treatment Plant. This expansion will support the development of new homes and accommodate future commercial and industrial projects.
Additionally, Colchester Council has approved funding for a new roundabout on MacElmon Road, with construction anticipated to begin in the summer of 2025. This project, part of Council’s 2025 Capital Budget, will unlock approximately 30 acres of highway commercial land along Highway 104 at Exit 13, paving the way for new commercial development. The roundabout is a key piece of the broader Debert Gateway vision, aimed at attracting businesses and amenities such as a fuel station, convenience stores, service retail, and food services—enhancing services for the Debert community, its growing workforce, and travelers along the 104.
Strategically located with access to major transportation networks, including highways, rail, and an on-site airfield, Debert Business Park offers businesses a competitive edge in reaching both domestic and international markets. These initiatives underscore Colchester's commitment to creating a thriving, business-friendly environment.

Tourism Strategy
Tourism is a key driver of Colchester’s economy, and we are committed to strengthening this vital sector. The Regional Marketing Levy By-law, passed in 2023, allows Colchester to collect a 3% tax on overnight accommodations. These funds will be reinvested in regional tourism initiatives, aimed at attracting visitors and enhancing local tourism infrastructure.
Business Retention and Expansion Program
This program works to identify and address the needs of existing businesses, ensuring that they have the support and resources to thrive. This program informs our strategic approach to attracting new businesses and supporting the growth of existing enterprises in the County.
Rural Broadband Internet Project
Colchester is collaborating with Xplore Inc., the Province of Nova Scotia and the Municipality of Cumberland to bring high-speed, unlimited data Internet plans to area residents. 18,000 homes and business will receive new access to internet service. More information on this initiative can be found here.
