Trails at Thomas' Cove Coastal Reserve

Thomas CoveThomas' Cove Coastal Reserve has 8 km of trails - the Headlands Trail (4 km) and the Economy Trail (4 km). These trails offer excellent views of Five Islands, the Cobequid Mountains and the southern shore of the Minas Basin. These trails provide access to the beach and one of the best opportunities to view the intertidal zone of the Minas Basin, in a location where the Bay of Fundy tides reach their highest.

The tidal range at Economy Point is 16 m (55 feet) and the ocean retreats more than 2 km (1.25 miles) at low tide, exposing sandstone ledges and dune-like sand formations on the ocean floor. Thomas' Cove is typical of the red sandstone shores of the Cobequid Tidal Bay landscape. The soft, red rocks and cliffs, exposed to the powerful Bay of Fundy tides, erode into interesting shapes.

CAUTION

The cliffs are continuously eroding; approach cliffs only at designated viewpoints. Use caution if you walk out on the mud flats; the tide comes in faster than you might realize.
