New House

Information required for a permit:

1. Approval for Sewer/Septic system. Municipal Sewer approvals can be applied for with your building permit. On site septic systems need approval from Department of Environment.
2. Driveway approval. Municipal road driveways can be applied for with your building permit. Provincial owned roads need driveway approval from Department of Transportation. Private roads do not require approval.
3. A detailed set of building plans.
4. A plot plan (ie. where the house is going with distances to other buildings and property lines.

Permit Cost: $0.10/square foot

Something to keep in mind: If you are in a zoned area, the Development Officer will need to issue a development permit approving that the setbacks meet our Land Use By-law.

An Addition

A building permit is required for all types of construction, including additions.

Information required for a permit:

1. Plot Plan showing the setbacks of the addition
2. Construction details/ Building plans

Permit Cost: $0.10/Square foot

Something to keep in mind: If you are putting an addition on the front of your house and live on a provincial road, you may need approval from Department of Transportation.

A Deck

A building permit is required for all types of construction, including decks.

Information required for a permit:

1. Plot Plan showing the setbacks of the deck
2. Construction details

Permit Cost: $0.10/ square foot

A Garage/Storage Shed

If you are located in an un-zoned area, a storage shed under 215 sq ft does not require a buildig permit, unless power is to be connected to the building.

Information required for a permit:

1. Plot Plan showing the setbacks of the garage
2. Construction details / Building plans

Permit Cost: Flat fee of $50.00 for 500 square feet and up
Flat fee of $10.00 for under 500 square feet

Something to keep in mind: Nova Scotia Power requires a permit number to hook power up to a shed or garage
