APRIL 28, 2020

The Colchester Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is unable to operate under the safe distancing requirement in order to protect our employees, families and the public during the COVID-19 global pandemic. Furthermore, storing mass quantities of recyclables is not safe or feasible. As of April 27, the Minister of Environment has granted the Colchester landfill temporary permission to dispose of recyclables during this unprecedented time. Regular collection will however continue.

Residents and businesses can choose to store their materials in a dry place on their property if it can be done so safely until we can return to regular operations.

Your continued cooperation to properly sort your recyclable materials is important so when the variance concludes, we can resume operations quickly and efficiently.

The Municipality of Colchester wants to thank all residents for their hard work on providing high quality recyclable materials for over twenty-three years. Nova Scotians and the Municipality of Colchester have been recognized as world leaders in waste resource management since 1996. The decision to landfill recyclables was a last resort and made only when all other avenues were exhausted.
