Colchester is announcing the implementation of a Marketing Levy, effective April 1, 2024.

In the Spring 2023, Marketing Levy By-laws were passed by the Municipality of the County of Colchester, the Town of Truro and the Town of Stewiacke. Millbrook First Nation is also an active partner in this regional initiative. The regional Marketing Levy mandates all accommodation providers in the region to collect and remit a 3% levy on all accommodations sold to overnight visitors within Truro, Stewiacke, Millbrook, and Colchester County.

The introduction of the regional Marketing Levy is an initiative to sustainably grow the local tourism sector. It was made possible through the Province's legislation, as outlined in the Municipal Government Act (Bill No. 24), enabling municipalities to introduce such levies. The Municipality of Colchester, the Town of Stewiacke, Millbrook First Nation, and the Town of Truro are proud to embark on this as a collaborative initiative.

As part of this, the municipalities are working together to develop a strategic plan for regional tourism. This strategic planning process is being facilitated through ACOA’s Sustainable Tourism Expansion Program (STEP) and overseen by a steering committee. Stakeholder engagement will take place throughout 2024 with the aim to bolster the local tourism industry.

This change comes as a result of province-wide legislation for levies, which allows municipalities to generate revenue to attract tourists to their communities.
