The 2025 Low Income Municipal Tax Assistance Program is open now. The program will close on Friday, May 2, 2025. Please note that resident MUST REAPPLY ANNUALLY.

Low Income Municipal Tax Assistance Program

SUBMISSION DEADLINE - MAY 2, 2025

Residential property owners may be eligible for an exemption on their 2025/2026 property taxes of $635.67. To qualify, applicants must own and occupy the property as your principal residence and fall into one of the categories in the table below:

 Family Size  Gross Income  Exemption
 Single Less than $31,491 $635.67
Family of 2  Less than $41, 595 $635.67
Family of 3 or more Less than $49,915 $635.67

Gross Income refers to the total gross income from all sources for the calendar year ending December 31, 2024. This must include the income of all members of the household, except full-time students. You should not include income from the following sources:
1. War Veterans Allowance Act (Canada);
2. Veterans Affairs Canada Pension; or
3. GST/HST Rebate

Application forms will automatically be mailed to last years eligible applicants. If you have not received your application form by April 1st, please call 902-897-3162.
Late applications will not be accepted.

Applicants must reapply annually. You may obtain an application from the Municipal Tax Office, 1 Church Street Truro, or by calling 902-897-3162. Exemptions are granted only for the current year. No retroactive exemptions will be granted.

For income verification purposes, please bring your 2024 INCOME TAX RETURN, which you submit to Revenue Canada. If you have filed via telephone through the File My Return service, please request a proof of income statement to provide as proof of income.

Notice of Assessments will NOT be accepted.

Colchester Planning Advisory Committee Meeting

The Colchester Planning Advisory Committee will be reviewing and making a recommendation on the draft county-wide planning documents at a public meeting on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

Volunteer Opportunities - Various Boards and Committees

The Municipality of Colchester is currently seeking volunteers to fill various vacancies on the following Boards and Committees for the 2024-2028 term of Council:

  • Agricultural Working Committee: representatives from the farming industry;
  • Citizens Monitoring Committee (Kemptown Host Community): host community representatives and members at large;
  • Citizens Monitoring Committee (for Wind Turbines): citizen representatives from each Debert, Greenfield/Lower Harmony, Nuttby, Tatamagouche, Truro Heights/Hilden, and Higgins Mountain;
  • Debert Source Water Protection Advisory Committee: citizen representative;
  • Debert Business Park Advisory Committee: business and citizen representatives;
  • Flood Advisory Committee: citizen representative;
  • Fundy Discovery Site Committee: citizen representatives;
  • Joint Planning Advisory Committee: citizen representative;
  • Police Advisory Board: citizen representative;
  • Tatamagouche Planning Advisory Committee: citizen representatives (applicants must reside within the Village);
  • Tatamagouche Source Water Protection Advisory Committee: citizen representatives (applicants must be from the French River watershed area); and,
  • Tatamagouche Water Utility Committee: citizen representatives (applicants must live in the area serviced by the Tatamagouche Water Utility).

Notice of Approval - Subdivision Bylaw

NOTICE OF APPROVAL
Subdivision Bylaw Amendments

TAKE NOTICE that on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, the Council of the Municipality of the County of Colchester approved amendments to the Subdivision Bylaw.

The amendments to the Bylaw, include text amendments, addition of requirements for flag lots, amendments regarding private roads, and requirements for lot approval of telecommunication towers. The amendments are effective immediately.

Copies of the Bylaw amendments are available from the Community Development Office, 1 Church Street, Truro, or through the County’s website at www.colchester.ca

Notice of Approval LUB Amendment & Development Agreement

Municipality of Colchester

NOTICE OF APPROVAL

TAKE  NOTICE  that the Council of the Municipality of the County of Colchester, at a hearing held on August 15, 2024, approved an amendment to the Central Colchester Land Use By-law and a development agreement. The development agreement and rezoning are on PID# 20440491, 149-151 Pictou Road, Bible Hill and will allow the two existing buildings to be converted into apartment buildings for a total of 30 units.

The land use by-law amendment and development agreement may be inspected at the Community Development Office, County Court House, 1 Church Street, Truro, N.S. during regular business hours and are also posted on the Municipal website at https://www.colchester.ca/planning

This decision may be appealed to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board within fourteen (14) days of the date of publication of this notice.
